ONE of the last evacuation flights for those fleeing war-ravaged Sudan took off as fierce battles erupted yesterday.
The extra UK rescue mission left Port Sudan after citizens faced a noon deadline to complete a dangerous 500-mile drive from Khartoum.
Most Irish citizens have been evacuated but it is feared some remain in the country.
Yesterday the British Ministry of Defence released pictures of the last flight from Wadi Seidna airbase on Saturday. Some 2,122 people on 23 flights were evacuated from the airfield near Khartoum.
