Shocked pedestrians saw the reptile creeping up to the front door of the Little Steps nursery in Drogheda, Co Louth.
They started shouting at the kids in the window to get away and soon owners Aoife and Conor Lennon ran out.
Within minutes gardai arrived after one of the terrified locals raised the alarm.
Conor had no idea whether or not Houdini was dangerous - but decided to try and catch him.
He said: "I got a brush and a box and just swept him into it.
"The gardai then helped and we got a bin and put the snake into it and then put the lid on&nbsp;top." Aoife said it was terrifying at the time but she had no idea there was a snake in the area.
She added: "It then turned out that the man next door owned it and actually had two snakes, one of which he had kept for 33 years.
"But thankfully they are corn snakes and are harmless." The snake's owner Colin Brennan said he only got the reptile a few months ago.
He added: "His owner in Dublin died and I was asked to take him. I have had my other corn snake for years.
"I actually call this new fella Houdini because he keeps trying to escape.
"I think he doesn't like Drogheda and wants to go back to Dublin."
