CHILDREN SUFFER IN IRELAND'S CROWDED HOSPITALS

A RECORD number of children were waiting on trolleys in Ireland’s overcrowded hospitals yesterday, it has been claimed.

Figures from the Irish Nurses’ and Midwives’ Organisation revealed 46 kids were denied a bed – an all-time high for paediatric care.

Those youngsters were included in the total of 517 patients who were waiting on a bed yesterday.

The latest figures follows revelations 24 hours earlier that 579 children waited more than a year for an appointment to access the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

It was revealed on Monday the CAMHS backlog represented an increase of 168% on the June 2020 figure of 216.

Yesterday, the INMO branded the number of children waiting for a hospital bed as “unprecedented” and “very worrying”.
