The world’s first Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss has recommended a referendum be held to force the State to respect the environment.

And 83% of those taking part voted for the move after 99 people selected from an initial 2,400 expressions of interest.

Following a seventh weekend of discussion, the citizens agreed “the State has comprehensively failed to adequately fund, implement and enforce existing national legislation, national policies, EU biodiversity-related laws and directives related to biodiversity”.
