SOME 113,000 people will be told by the HSE that their data was breached as part of a cyber attack that brought the health service to its knees in 2021.
But they are entitled to bring a case to the Circuit Court under data protection laws.
The ransomware attack resulted in the HSE having to close down its IT services in April 2021.
It caused widespread delays and the cancellation of appointments at hospitals in the country.
Data was stolen in the attack included 94,800 patients (84%) and 18,200 staff members (16%).
The HSE started to send letters to those affected from yesterday. If people receive a letter, they can either choose to ignore it or contact a dedicated HSE line. They can then make a request through the HSE Data Notification Portal or via the post.
Joe Ryan, the HSE&rsquo;s national director, who is leading the notification programme, said: &ldquo;We have seen no evidence that personal data relating to the HSE cyber attack has been shared or used fraudulently.&rdquo;
Cabinet noted yesterday that no data had been shared online.
