Over 150,000 people visited the stretch between Vijay Chowk and India Gate on Sunday, a footfall similar to Saturday, as police officers worked overtime keep traffic and people moving, in a bid to keep the thoroughfare free of snarls.
With the initial crowds in mind, the Delhi Police has also decided, for a week, not to take down barricades and doorframe metal detectors that were initially installed solely for Thursday's inauguration ceremony, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi reopened Central Vista Avenue for the public and unveiled a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at the canopy behind India Gate.
"The barricading will continue and people will have to pass through the metal detectors to access the area. This arrangement is likely to continue for a week," said a senior Delhi Police officer who asked not to be named.
Unlike Saturday, however, commuters who visited, or passed through, the area on Sunday said traffic was slower than usual.
"It took me almost 10-12 minutes to cover the distance 1 between Tilak Marg and Kartavya Path at C-hexagon on Sunday evening," said Sunita Verma, an entrepreneur who visited India Gate with her family.
