HE IS THE first retired officer to be appointed to the position of the country's first Chief of Defence Staff. Lt General Anil Chauhan had retired as the Eastern Army Commander in May last year and was serving as the Military Advisor to the National Security Council. His appointment comes more than nine months after the death of General Bipin Rawat.

Lt Gen Chauhan will also function as secretary to government of India, department of military affairs.

In a career spanning nearly 40 years, he has held several command, staff and instrumental appointments with extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in J&Kand the North East.

Lt Gen Chauhan has authored a book, Aftermath of A Nuclear Attack, which was published in 2010. He has also authored the History of 11 Gorkha Rifles Regimental Centre while commanding the Regimental Centre. He is married to artist Anupama and has a daughter. The war specialist is also an art aficionado with keen interest in Tibetan art.
