As the prince celebrates his 40th birthday, Robert Jobson looks at how his role will become more critical over the next decade
William's sense of duty, humanity and compassion will preserve the Crown

BEHIND Prince William's warm smile is a steely determination not to let himself, his family, or his country down.

He takes duty seriously and, increasingly, his grandmother the Queen and father Prince Charles turn to him for his thoughts on matters of the day. His strong positions on keeping Prince Andrew out of the royal fold and how to manage the Harry and Meghan situation have been firm, but many would say fair.

He knows that he must eventually develop the role of king and embrace the role his way, the Cambridge way.

William realises that to stay relevant the monarchy must adapt with the times, to modernise, and he has already made it more emotionally open.

His wife Kate - his greatest asset is often seen discussing his latest speech before he is called to deliver on any royal tour. When the time comes, King William V and Queen Catherine will be a dynamic royal couple, devoted to each other, the monarchy and their people.

He's world-class but the demands are mounting for Jude Bellingham

REAL MADRID always seemed destined to win a 15th European Cup last weekend and the manner of their 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund could hardly have been more predictable, the German side missing a host of chances before paying an inevitable price - but Jude Bellingham's story added enormous intrigue to an otherwise unsurprising outcome.

A glass of rosé at Annabel's with Kylie? I should be so lucky...

IT is 2004 and I am 14, standing in a cold, wet field, muddy football socks about my ankles and clutching protectively what I hope becomes a package sometime soon. I am about to face an opposition free kick.
