THOUSANDS of men were today attempting to flee Russia to avoid a call-up to fight in Ukraine.

Russians head for borders to escape call-up AMIL

Both Finland and Georgia reported heavy traffic on their borders following Vladimir Putin's order for a partial military mobilisation.

A border guard on Finland's southeastern border said the number of Russians entering the country was double that a week ago.

The Kremlin claimed reports of men fleeing were exaggerated. However, on the border with Georgia there were queues of vehicles stretching for miles.
