PAPUA New Guinea's Prime Minister has hit back at Joe Biden after he implied his uncle was eaten by "cannibals" there in World War Two.
The US leader claimed last week his Army Air Corps aviator relative, Second Lt. Ambrose Finnegan, was shot down over the South Pacific nation during heavy fighting.
"They never found the body because there used to be there were a lot of cannibals for real in that part of New Guinea," Biden said, referring to the country's mainland.
PNG's leader James Marape said: "President Biden's remarks may have been a slip of the tongue. However, my country does not deserve to be labelled as such."
He said his country was "needlessly dragged into a conflict that was not their doing"
Mr Marape added PNG and the Solomon Islands were "littered with the remains of WWII, including human remains, plane wrecks, shipwrecks, tunnels and bombs.
"Our people daily live with the fear of being killed by detonated bombs of WWII." The nation's US Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
