The Bros star, 53, owns a bulldog called Reggie who lives with him in the States.
However, he could not bear to be without his pooch while on Strictly so he coughed up the money for him to make the 24-hour journey from LA to Frankfurt by plane and then be driven to London.
Singer Matt said: "It's a military operation trying to get Reggie - everything from shots to his own passport. It has been endless.
"The temperatures in LA and Germany both had to be below 80F at the time of departure because he is a bulldog. It's all to do with his breathing.
"He is everything to me. He's my furry son. I love him with all my heart. We are inseparable and we are telepathic."
Matt's appearance on the first live show on Saturday caused a stir as viewers were baffled by his barnet.
The star normally sports a hat but danced without it when he was with pro-Nadiya Bychkova and some fans cruelly claimed he looked like he had "Action Man and Lego hair".
