THIEVES cooking are nicking oil to flog to hard-up motorists after a spike in diesel prices.
Pubs, restaurants and takeaways have been ordered to beef up security after a spate of thefts.
Cops warned some thieves are even posing as oil recycling firm employees.
A spokesman in Sussex said: "The theft of cooking oil has been identified as a national issue, and suspects have claimed to be from the company hired to collect the oil and have produced what has looked like fake IDs." North Yorkshire Police chiefs said they were probing three incidents over three days.
One said: "Motorists filling their tanks with such products are warned that it is likely to be very harmful to modern diesel engines with fuel injectors&nbsp;and emission control devices put at serious risk of clogging!"
Diesel prices have hit an average of &pound;1.81 per litre.
Police said businesses must ensure their oil is kept securely for recycling.
The British Retail Consortium said the conflict in Ukraine had "disrupted supplies of sunflower oil to the UK", seeing the price of cooking oil also rocket.
