Unite chief Sharon Graham, who represents 100,000 NHS staff, is fuming as paramedics reveal a service on its knees.
Kelvin Hurd, a specialist paramedic with 15 years' service, says crippling staffing shortages across the service are seeing emergencies going unanswered. He says: "There is no one there to respond" to 999 calls and patients are being left stuck in ambulances for up to three hours.
"We hear them over the radio, calling for a response to category ones life-threatening emergencies - and no one's there to respond," he said.
A Department of Health spokesman said: "We are taking urgent action to support services. This includes an extra &pound;500 million to speed up hospital discharge and free up beds, getting ambulances back on the road."&nbsp;
