SELF-DRIVE cars will be able to make their own way back to the showroom if owners fail to keep up with payments.
Ford has submitted a patent in the US for a "multi-step repossession procedure" system allowing hi-tech motors to drive back to the garage if owners cannot meet the terms of their lease or loan.
First, the owner would be sent a warning message via the car's system screen. The car would then be able to disable features such as its satnav, speakers and the air-conditioning.
The aim, according to Ford's patent, would be to create a "certain level of discomfort" in a bid to nudge the owner into forking out.
The next step could involve the car playing "incessant and unpleasant sounds" or even lock out owners at certain times. And if the customer still refuses to make their payments the car could drive itself back to the garage.
Though the patent appears to reveal Ford's plans for self-driving motors, it is not clear when the technology will be available to build one.
A Ford spokesman said: "We submit patents on new inventions as a normal course of business but they aren't necessarily an indication of new product plans."&nbsp;&nbsp;
