THE original James Bond was a Tudor spy who posed as a tennis player and informed Elizabeth I.

Author Christian Howgill said the first secret agent to use "007" as a code was John Dee, who operated 500 years ago.

He told the Chalke Valley History Festival that Dee was a special favourite of the queen.
