EDUCATION Secretary Gillian Keegan has slammed parents who let their kids skip school on Fridays.
The minister said parents working from home have contributed to a rise in pupils missing school days.
She added that 50,000 more pupils were absent at the end of the week compared with the start, as parents pull them out of class for weekends away or holidays.
Ms Keegan said: "It is unacceptable to take a deliberate decision to take your child out of school." Latest government figures show that student absenteeism jumps by 20% on Fridays.
Last year the minister was accused of being "flippant" and unhelpful by school leaders after suggesting that headteachers should personally collect absent pupils to help solve England's "crisis" in school attendance.
