Clear-air turbulence, which can appear without warning and in extreme cases damage aircraft and injuries, cause has increased worldwide.
Boffins found CO2 emissions were increasing wind shear in the jet stream, causing hair-raising plane journeys.

Prof Paul Williams said: "We should be investing in improved turbulence forecasting and detection systems to prevent the&nbsp;rougher air from translating into bumpier flights."
In the North Atlantic the total annual duration of severe turbulence went up by 55% from 17.7 hours in 1979 to 27.4 hours in 2020.
Moderate turbulence increased by 37% from 70.0 to 96.1 hours, and light turbulence by 17% from 466.5 to 546.8 hours, the University of Reading study found.
The researchers found turbulence has also risen in Europe, the Middle East and the South Atlantic.
