HOPES of interest rates being cut were fading last night after inflation fell by less than expected.
Inflation dropped last month to 3.2% from 3.4% - its lowest since September 2021, as food prices rose at a slower pace.
But it was still above the 3.1% predicted by economists. Experts pushed back forecasts for a cut in interest rates, currently at a 15-year high of 5.25%, until later this year.
Ian Stewart, of Deloitte, said: "Inflation is in retreat but the Bank of England cannot yet be sure that it is beaten."
