But women chuckle more in general and increasingly as they get older.
And researchers also found laughter really is the best medicine but has little impact on overall cheerfulness.
A good guffaw boosts a person's happiness levels and their life&nbsp;satisfaction, the study from Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences in Austria found.
The study used wrist-worn sensors to analyse belly laughs and fits of laughter in participants' everyday life for four weeks.
Both men and women averaged 2.5 belly laughs a day, with a fit of laughter every fourth day.
But women averaged about 10% more belly laughs than men.
Peak time for belly laughs was 8pm, with Fridays getting the most laughs, which researchers believe is in anticipation of the weekend.
A low time for laughs was early morning, and Wednesday was the day with the least laughs.
Happiness went up by about 25% at around the time of a belly laugh, and by about a third after a fit of laughter, the research found.
"Participants who were happier and more satisfied with their life laughed more frequently than unhappier, unsatisfied participants," the study said.
