Thomas points to lack of recon as crash ends his golden chance

BLOODY BRONZE

GERAINT THOMAS cursed a lack of scouting after an early crash left him with bloodied knees and a bronze medal instead of Commonwealth Games gold.

No stranger to tarmac sandwiches and gravel rash, Thomas has hit more decks than a DJ in a glittering career which has brought him a Tour de France Yellow Jersey and Olympic gold on the track.

But when he skidded into a barrier and traffic cones just two minutes into his 23-mile time trial, the lost momentum presented Australian Rohan Dennis with an open road to top the podium.

In a field including a 48-year-old House of Commons doorkeeper and a 46-year-old immigration officer from the Falkland Islands, Thomas was grateful to salvage a bronze medal behind former Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Dennis and England’s rising star Fred Wright.
