TINY beach huts are in big demand as places to kip on seaside holidays. The shacks were traditionally used as somewhere to brew tea and store beach gear on a day trip. Owners of the huts, which cost an average of £123,524, have turned them into luxury accommodation with beds, kitchens and more. Lily Smith, a travel expert from BeachHuts.​com, said it was due to an increase in people buying the huts, allowing them to rent them out. The majority are leased from local councils and cannot be used for overnight stays. But Lily said: “Many holidaymakers would love to hear the waves lap on the beach outside their hut while they lie in bed. That was only a pipe dream for most because of strict local authority controls. “Thankfully, it is now significantly easier for holidaymakers to find freehold beach huts and chalets, whose owners are offering overnight accommodation.” Tourists have been flocking to book huts in places such as Bournemouth, Newquay and St Ives. Lily added: “We’d love more local authorities to grant freehold tenures with no night-time occupancy. “With some resorts struggling with low visitor numbers this summer, it would be a great way to boost tourism and help support local businesses.”
