Members of focus groups in key Tory seats hit out and a YouGov poll found 77% of Brits thought it was "normal" to bet.
One participant, from Doncaster, South Yorks, said: "The Government shouldn't be sticking their noses in. They are trying to step in on people spending their money. I should be able to do what I like with my money."
Another, from Blackpool, added: "They are making a mockery of people and their ability to just be grown-ups.
