The remains of Sergeant Dick Musgrave were discovered almost a century to the day the 32-year-old had disappeared during the Battle of Hill 70 in August 1917.
What helped the forensic identification take place was the rare Military Medal ribbon he had been awarded for bravery on April 14 1917.
DNA samples were taken from his family near Langholm in Dumfries-shire.
Some of them attended yesterday's committal at the Loos British Cemetery, which finally confirmed Sgt Musgrave's identity.
