Divorced Emily, 41, says she has given up on romance while focusing on her career.
But playing the character of Rose in Amazon's new Scottish-based action thriller has taught her that she doesn't have to choose one over the other.
Emily, whose character in The Rig has an offshore romance with Fulmer, played by Martin Compston, said: "The part came to me at a time when I felt Rose and I were in a similar place.
"We're both workaholics, but Rose and I needed to learn the same lesson she ultimately learns and I haven't yet.
"I'd made the decision not to keep juggling work and relationships. I chose work.
"Rose learns, through being with Fulmer Martin Compston - that they're not necessarily mutually exclusive, and can maybe even complement each other." Emily, who is best known for playing Stevie Budd in hit comedy Schitt's Creek, last night joined her co-stars from The Rig for a red carpet premiere of the show at The Everyman cinema in Edinburgh.
The actor split from footballer Matthew Smith in 2014 after eight years of marriage. She went on to get engaged to singer-songwriter Teddy Geiger, but the couple separated in 2019.
Emily stars in Prime Video eco-horror The Rig alongside Scottish actors including Game of Throne's Iain Glen and Guilt star Mark Bonnar.
The six-part show, written by David Macpherson, tells the story of a group of workers on an oil rig in Scottish waters. They are due to return to the mainland when a mysterious fog enshrouds them and supernatural forces take hold.
The character-driven mystery thriller follows the crew of Kinloch Bravo oil rig as they fight for survival after the fog cuts off all communication with the shore, and leaves them stranded in the fierce waves of the North Sea.
