A LACK of subjects on offer at schools in poor areas is making the attainment gap worse, a study has found.
The Stirling University report found there were fewer subjects available to study in secondary schools since the introduction of the Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland. It found this caused problems for pupils at schools in poorer areas.
Experts said they'd found "significant unintended consequences for young people, teachers and schools, and serious equity concerns" due to a narrower subject choice.
The study reveals that S4 students were studying fewer subjects than before the Curriculum for Excellence was introduced&nbsp;despite the new system aiming to broaden the range of subjects on offer.
Education Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville&nbsp;said: "This report contains some important findings which we will reflect on.
"An important measure of success is the qualifications that pupils leave school with and last year's exam results showed the gap between attainment levels in the least and most deprived areas narrowed from 2019, when exams were last held."
