MORTGAGE payments for tens of thousands of families are set to climb again after the Bank of England hiked interest rates yesterday.
The rate went up to 4.25 per cent from four per cent - the 11th rise in a row - after policymakers on the Bank's nine-strong Monetary Policy Committee voted for the rise following a surprise jump in inflation last month.
Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: "Today's interest rate announcement will be a source of huge concern for families across the country who will be thinking about the impact this will have on their finances." Raising rates is aimed at quelling demand in the economy because households have less&nbsp;money to spend - meaning it should help fuel a fall in inflation as families cut outgoings.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt backed the rate rise, saying: "With rising prices strangling growth and eroding family budgets, the sooner we grip inflation the better for everyone.
