THE Tories were last night accused of trying to smear Angela Rayner in a bid to deflect from their disastrous 14-year record in office.

After police said they would now probe claims the deputy Labour leader broke electoral law over a house she lived in almost a decade ago, she insisted she had done nothing wrong and welcomes the chance to prove it.

Rayner vowed to quit if she is found guilty of a crime.

She said: "We have seen the Tory Party use this playbook before, reporting opponents to the police during election campaigns to distract from their record.

"If I committed a criminal offence, I would do the right thing and step down. The public deserves politicians who know the rules apply to them.
