FIREFIGHTING has been declared a cancer-causing profession by the World Health Organization.
Toxic fumes from burning buildings are thought to be why research shows crew members are four times more likely to be diagnosed with it.
The WHO found firefighters face the same type of cancer found in people exposed to asbestos.
The Fire Brigades Union responded by calling on the Government to also recognise the profession as cancer-causing.
Its national officer, Riccardo la Torre, said: "This is a hugely significant and vital step forward to getting firefighters the recognition and protection that they need to do their jobs safely."
