REWIND a year and consider the position of Billy Gilmour within the Scotland set-up.

The kid was being talked about as a potential great.

Fresh from his brilliance against England at the Euros, Gilmour was at the heart of the side which racked up four straight wins against Israel, Faroe Islands, Moldova, and Denmark to help get his nation a second spot in their section and into a World Cup play-off. At that stage, you could barely find a pundit who didn't say Steve Clarke should be building a team around him for the next 10 years.

Now, with Scott McTominay suspended and a gaping hole in the team right where the newly-signed Brighton kid operates, it's not even a given he'll step in.
