A LORRY driver who killed a French cyclist after running her over at a set of traffic lights has avoided jail.
Paul Mowat, 69, turned at the lights in Glasgow city centre and hit Emma Burke Newman, 22, who had been on the lane to his left.
Emma was dragged under the vehicle for about 53 metres in the incident on January 27 last year.
Despite being conscious at the scene, Emma died from her injuries at hospital&nbsp;around 90 minutes later.&nbsp;Mowat who claimed he was unable to see Emma - was later found to have had his view obstructed by a reversing camera, dirty mirrors and windscreen.
He pled guilty last month at Glasgow Sheriff Court to death by careless driving.
At sentencing yesterday it was revealed devastated Mowat sat and held Emma's hand and apologised to her as emergency services raced to save her. Sheriff Matthew Jackson KC said: "Mr Mowat has shown understanding and empathy.
"He acted with compassion when he held her hand and comforted her."
Mowat, Glasgow, of was ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work and put under supervision for 12 months. He was also disqualified from driving for 12 months.
