Newcastleton, which is close to the English border, was without a fuel station for a decade, forcing residents - most of whom are self-employed or work in agriculture - to make long journeys to fill up.

Trade had also suffered in the village but the new fuel station is processing 21,000 litres per week, and between 400,000 and 500,000 litres per year.

A £320,000 windfall, including cash from the National Lottery, paid for the renovations such as a new forecourt and fuel tanks.
