SOUTH Africa’s president has been urged to speed up the extradition of an alleged sex offender dubbed “Scotland’s Savile”.
SNP MP Owen Thompson has written to president Cyril Ramaphosa for help to bring former Edinburgh Academy teacher Iain Wares to face justice in Scotland.
Wares was likened to Jimmy Savile by broadcaster Nicky Campbell.
The retired teacher faces charges of more than 80 offences against more than 40 victims in Scotland, where he taught at private schools Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College.
Midlothian MP Thompson also met with Scotland’s Lord Advocate to discuss the case. He said: “I have been contacted by families affected by this man’s alleged crimes and I was horrified by what I heard.
“Time is of the essence here. Mr Wares is well into his 80s so it is imperative he is brought to Scotland so that he can face justice as soon as possible.
