When Ruslan Gladkiy was photographed kissing Hordiy as he said farewell at Lviv train station, he feared he would never see his son again.
Ruslan told him: "Be brave for your mother" and nine-year-old Hordiy certainly was. Now Ruslan can finally hug Hordiy again after the family decided they should return to war-torn Ukraine.
They are among hundreds of families who have made the brave decision to come back.
Because no men between the ages of 18 and 60, are allowed to leave the country, many wives and children are heading home so their families can be reunited again. It means there has been an influx of people on incoming trains to the capital Kyiv and all cities in the west of the country.
Last night Ruslan said: "I was so very happy to see my family again.
"We haven't seen each other for three months.
"Obviously we could video call and speak on the phone but to see and hold my wife and children again was fantastic.
"What next for us and our country? Only God knows." As soon as the Russian army invaded Ukraine Ruslan, 35, a driver decided he must get his family to safety out of the country.
He got train tickets for wife Halyna, 37, Hordiy and daughter Emilia, four, to Budapest. They ended up in Italy where they stayed with relatives. But now they have returned despite the potential dangers.
