BANK of England boss Andrew Bailey has been attacked for suggesting workers' pay should not keep up with the cost of living.
Bailey warned against big increases, saying it would make inflation worse.
He added: "It's the people who are least well off who are worse affected because they don't have the bargaining power."
But the TUC's head of economics, Kate Bell, said: "It's time for companies to rein in their profits, not for hard-pressed workers to cut back even further. People are suffering a huge fall in living standards as prices soar."
The Bank of England, which on Thursday upped interest rates by 0.5 per cent and predicted 13 per cent inflation, also came under fire from Andrew Sentance, a former member of the its rate-setting committee.
He said policymakers "have acted too late" to put up borrowing rates.
