Royal College of Nursing Scotland's second annual The Nursing Workforce in Scotland report is published in the lead-up to a round table of union members with Scotland's politicians and nursing leaders this week.
In the report, RCN Scotland calls for a retention strategy that focuses on career progression, flexible working and better&nbsp;support to enable more nursing students to complete their course.
Scottish Labour's health spokeswoman Jackie Baillie said: "Today's report must be a clarion call for action to support Scotland's nurses... I call on Michael Matheson to listen to the RCN, to other nursing unions, to experts and to staff to deliver the workforce plan that we need."
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said:&nbsp;"Michael Matheson must listen to the findings of this report and put nursing expertise at the heart of our NHS recovery."
