Fish and chip shop owners warn they may have to up prices, reduce portion sizes or do both.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said a typical large portion costs from &pound;4 to &pound;4.50.
He added: "It could nudge &pound;5 or beyond, the days of cheap potatoes are gone."
Some chippies have already upped the price to &pound;5. Crook said a 25kg bag of&nbsp;potatoes has risen from &pound;16 to &pound;18. "It could go to &pound;30 or higher," he warned, which would top a spike last year, when prices were the highest since 1976.
Figures from last year showed fish and chips meals increased by 19 per cent on average over the previous 12 months.
Crook said that with bills for energy, wages and packaging rising, some chippies were barely breaking even. He added: "It's been rough for years." Supermarkets have reported a sharp rise - maris pipers jumped more than a fifth between January and February.
Richard Bramley, a farmer from near York and chair of the National Farmers' Union environment forum, lost 25 per cent of last year's crop. He said: "A window for planting is getting smaller."
