JAMIE Vardy has kicked off after Wayne Rooney claimed he had to tell him to get his wife Rebekah to “calm down” during Euro 2016.
On the stand in the High Court for the first time at their wives’ libel trial, Rooney said he had been asked to speak to Vardy about Rebekah’s media activities as they were “causing problems and distractions”.
Mr Rooney told the court how the then-England manager Roy Hodgson and his assistant Gary Neville had asked him to intervene.
He said: “They asked me, as captain, would I be able to speak to Mr Vardy on issues regarding his wife.
“I think we all knew that it was an awkward subject. I’d need to speak to Mr Vardy and ask him to speak to his wife and ask him to say, to ask his wife, to calm down.”
But in a dramatic development outside court, Mr Vardy’s representative issued a statement on behalf of the Leicester City footballer rubbishing the claims. Mr Vardy said: “Wayne is talking nonsense.
“He must be confused because he never spoke to me about issues concerning Becky’s media work at Euro 2016. There was nothing to speak about, I know this because I discuss everything with Becky.”
Earlier, Hugh Tomlinson QC, for Mrs. Vardy, said to Mr. Rooney: “Ask his wife to calm down? She wasn’t dancing on tables.” He replied: “No, she wasn’t, as far as I’m aware.”
