Nikki Allan was killed in 1992 after leaving her grandparents' home. She was stabbed 37 times and beaten with a brick. David Thomas Boyd, 54, of Norton, County Durham, appeared at Newcastle crown court yesterday.
Nikki's mum Sharon Henderson, 55, had been expected in court but said instead: "I don't know what to say to everyone, I'm numb.
"I said to CID this morning I need to go to the cemetery to tell Nikki. I will not be going to the court, it's all too much."
Nikki's body was discovered in the dockland area of Sunderland, Tyne, and Wear, near the block of flats where her grandparents and parents both had homes.
Boyd wore a white T-shirt during the 15-minute hearing and spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth. Judge Paul Sloan QC set a trial preparation hearing for June 20 and a trial date for January 11.
In 1993 George Heron, then 24, stood trial for Nikki's murder but was cleared on the judge's direction after legal arguments.
Sunderland Strangler Steven Grieveson, who murdered four teenage boys, was also suspected.
