Calling for unity in his victory speech, he urged the party to be "one team" after a divisive five-week contest to replace Nicola Sturgeon.
At 37, he will be the youngest leader of the Scottish government - and the first British Asian and Muslim to hold the post.
And he instantly vowed to deliver independence.
