RISHI Sunak last night backed away from the Tories' election pledge to reduce net migration.
As he flew to Japan for talks with G7 world leaders, the PM was asked whether he still stood by his vow that "overall numbers will come down".
At the time of the 2019 poll, net migration stood at just over 250,000.
Figures due next week are set to show the figure hit 700,000 last year.
Last week, Labour leader Keir Starmer accused the Government of losing control of the issue.
