Andrew Bedwell spent three years building the 3.5-metre vessel in his garage in Lancashire.
But hours after he left Newfoundland, Canada, it started leaking and he had to return to shore.
The vessel, named Big C and with a top speed of just 2.5mph, then sank in the harbour.
Andrew, 49, said the boat had been "destroyed" after it was dropped on to the harbourside during an attempted recovery bid.
He said "I don't know what to say to everyone who helped me but Big C's no more. She can't carry on. I can't do it. I'm sorry."
