Dozens dead after migrant boat dashed on rocks

AT least 58 migrants including a baby have died after their wooden boat broke apart trying to land in a storm off the south coast of Italy.

The overloaded vessel was destroyed as it crashed into rocky reefs yesterday.

Among those killed were 12 children, including the baby whose body was washed up on the beach, officials said.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the migrants were crowded into the 66ft boat in adverse weather conditions.

One survivor was arrested on migrant trafficking charges.

Ms Meloni added: "It's inhumane to exchange the lives of men, women and children for the price of a ticket paid for in the false hope of a safe voyage.
