ARTIFICIAL intelligence cameras are being set up to catch motorway litterbugs.
They will be installed in lay-bys in the coming weeks for a trial, says National Highways.
Unlike traditional CCTV, which requires enforcement officers to look through hours of footage, the AI version will pick out offences automatically.
Images will be sent to a control room for review.
Fixed penalty charges of up to &pound;100 will then be issued to the person registered to the vehicle's licence plate.
National Highways is facing pressure to crack down on the&nbsp;littering blight on roads. Last month the Department for Transport revealed just under 40% of National Highways roads are graded below B for litter meaning significant levels of rubbish were found.
National Highways does not have the power to take enforcement action. So it has set up a partnership with East Hampshire county council, which will issue the fines.
National Highways' Freda Rashdi said: "Littering is a social problem and we're working hard to tackle it on our roads.
"But if people don't drop litter in the first place, it wouldn't need to be picked up."&nbsp;
