THE boss of British Gas who said he could not justify his &pound;4.5million salary has pocketed a &pound;3.7m rise.
Fatcat Chris O'Shea, 50, saw his package rocket to &pound;8.2million last year, equivalent to &pound;158,000 a week, as millions of British Gas customers battled energy bills.
The disclosure came two months after the chief executive of British Gas owner Centrica told the BBC in January: "I'm incredibly fortunate. I don't set my own pay, that's set by our remuneration committee."
Referring to his 2022 &pound;4.5m pay, he said: "You can't justify a salary of that size." Last year's sum included a &pound;7.3m bonus bonanza.
The biggest chunk was &pound;5.9m from a long-term bonus scheme.
Centrica admitted &pound;3.9m of that was due to the share price rise. British Gas made profits of &pound;751m last year. Centrica made profits of nearly &pound;2.8billion.
Luke Hildyard, of the High Pay Centre, said: "It's not credible to argue the work he does is proportionate to a windfall even half the size of this crazed payout."
Simon Francis, of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: "The pay of one man could cover the energy bills of over 48,000 homes."
Carol Arrowsmith, head of Centrica's boardroom pay setting remuneration committee, said it had to ensure long-term success.
