BRITISH swimming legend David Wilkie died yesterday after a battle with cancer.

The Scottish sensation sent shockwaves through the sport as he won 200m breaststroke gold at the Olympics in Montreal in 1976.

He eclipsed his great rival John Hencken to triumph in a time of two minutes 15.11 seconds, smashing the American's world record by more than three seconds.

It meant Wilkie was the first British man to win Olympic gold in the pool in 68 years.
