A MAN sacked after priceless treasures vanished from the British Museum is a senior curator who had worked there for 30 years.
Peter Higgs, 56, a world expert on ancient Greece, lost his job this summer when gold, semi-precious stones and glass jewellery were found missing.
He was reportedly named to bosses three years ago when items such as Roman jewellery allegedly went up for sale on eBay - but kept his job.
Some treasures are said to have been sold on eBay as long ago as 2016.
It is claimed the seller began by disposing of items that were not properly catalogued but then got "sloppy" and sold things that could be traced.
Yesterday Mr Higgs's son Greg said his dad was innocent and that his sacking had been a huge shock.
He added: "He's not done anything. He's not happy about it at all. He's lost his job and his reputation.
