CONFERENCE OF CHAOS: TORY REBELS AFTER TRUSS'S SCALP
JOHN STEVENS
Gone by Christmas
  • PM faces axe over tax cuts furore
  • MPs may change rule to oust her
  • But she blames it all on Kwarteng

LIZ Truss’s first Tory conference as PM got off to a disastrous start yesterday as furious senior figures turned on her £45billion tax gift for the rich.

A former Cabinet member warned she would be gone by Christmas unless she ditches her plan to hand an extra £10,000 to those earning more than £150,000, amid fears benefits will be slashed to pay for it.

Big hitter Michael Gove also joined the rebellion, suggesting he would vote against cutting the 45p top rate of income tax.

And there was a call to change the rules that protect new PMs from no-confidence votes in their first year so MPs can oust her.

Ms Truss yesterday finally admitted she blundered over how she approached her mini-Budget. But she has vowed to plough on with reforms and was accused of throwing Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng under a bus by insisting it was his idea.
