A PATIENT on life support has received a kidney transplant from a genetically modified pig.
The man had been declared brain dead and was operated on in a trial, with his family's consent.
He received a pig kidney with 10 key gene changes to make them more&nbsp;compatible and the organ worked for the duration of the week-long test.
This study is the first that has successfully reduced the chemical waste product creatinine down to&nbsp;healthy levels, which could in theory sustain life.
Lead author Dr Jayme Locke, of the University of Alabama in the US, said: "This study showcases xenotrans&nbsp;plant [from animals] as a viable potential solution to an organ shortage crisis responsible for thousands of preventable deaths annually.
"We [will] look to perform additional transplants in this model...&nbsp;to make the case that we are ready to do this in living people."
About 5,000 patients in the UK are&nbsp;in need of kidney transplants because of a gap between supply and demand.
