A SPACECRAFT will smash into an asteroid next week in a mission to protect the planet.
The 560ft wide asteroid - named Dimorphos - is 6.8million miles away and poses no threat to Earth.
But NASA's mission is to show that dangerous incoming rocks can be deflected by crashing objects into them.
Scientists are attempting to change its orbit around a much larger asteroid
The craft, called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, will speed up to 15,000mph.
It is expected to hit Dimorphos at 12.14 am on Tuesday, September 27, 10 months after launching on SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket.
Nasa said: "DART's target asteroid is the perfect testing ground to see if this method would be a viable way to protect our planet in the future."
