Bill passes….…. 57 Tories rebel
HEALTH experts last night welcomed the smoking ban victory in a historic move that could saving countless lives.
MPs voted 383 to 67 in favour of blocking anyone born after January 1,2009 from buying cigarettes.
Those turning 15 this year or younger will never be able to legally smoke if the ban becomes law.
The Tobacco and Vaping Bill will also limit disposable vapes that get kids hooked on nicotine.
But critics, including 57 Tory MPs who rebelled against the Bill, branded it a "nanny state policy".
The British Heart Foundation said it was "absolutely delighted" MPs had voted for the ban.
Chief executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths added: "This is a game changer and will ensure future generations are protected from the devastating consequences of smoking. We urge politicians of all parties to get behind this." Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty hailed the ban.
